The development of a new jug design

From an idea to serial production
New ideas are constantly being developed, trends on the water filter market are being observed and our customers’ feedback is taken into consideration. After careful inspection, realisable innovations are chosen from a large amount of new ideas.
Using the Aqua Select water filter ‘Penguin’ as an example, a product’s development could proceed as follows:
1. In a briefing, exact information about the new product is recorded. For example, questions of ergonomics and test results are taken into consideration.
Material, colour and shape of the new filter are important aspects. It must be practical, of a good price and comfortable for the customer to use.
2. A designer develops some sketches according to the requirements (see picture 1).
These sketches are the basis for further tests. In this phase, the new product receives its first “face” and is often readjusted afterwards.
3. Using computer aided design, a 3D design study is created (see pictures 2 and 3) and printed in colour. The whole jug and individual elements like the handle, lid and cartridge holder are well visible. Based on this design study, the product is fine-tuned.
Afterwards, prototypes of the jug are produced. These are tested for their handling, the properties of the used material, the surface feel, colours and flow characteristics. Many test persons help evaluate the product at this stage.
When each suggestion for improvement has been considered, either new prototypes are produced or the product is taken to serial production.
After the last prototypes have been cleared, the new water filter is mass produced (picture 4).
